Alfred J. Fish, M.D., is a senior member of the Division of Pediatric Nephrology.  He has participated in extensive research studies dealing with the immune mechanisms of glomerular injury.  This work led to further definition and characterization of the biochemical composition of the glomerular basement membrane which is the critical filtration surface involving the kidney.  Many important relationships to autoimmune injury of the kidney, glomerulonephritis, and diabetic nephropathy grew out of these research studies.

Having had an extensive involvement in both clinical and bench research, led to an appreciation of the ongoing need for research dollars being available to young pediatric nephrology fellows and junior faculty.  Dr. Fish was instrumental in forming the University Children's Foundation where the opportunity to relate closely to leaders in the business community, and private donors, led to endowment of research chairs, and procurement of funds for research.  The Department of Pediatrics fundraising has been most successful. Dr. Fish is closely involved with the University Pediatric Foundation, now the major arm of the Department of Pediatrics fundraising activities.
