Dr. Nevins is most directly involved in patient-related clinical research centering on the care of children with chronic kidney disease.  He has been particularly active in the care of children requiring dialysis and transplantation.  He developed and popularized special hemodialysis catheters for infants and small children.  He published the first study demonstrating the benefits of preemptive renal transplantation in young children.  Dr. Nevins established the University's peritoneal dialysis program for children in the 1980s and has been the medical director of pediatric dialysis services at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, a division of Fairview, for more than a decade.

Dr. Nevins' funded research interests include the growth and development of children with chronic renal failure both on dialysis and following renal transplantation.  Presently he is the principal investigator on a NIH-sponsored project examining the patterns of medication taking after renal transplantation and their impact on transplant outcomes.  Current work seeks predictors of adverse events posttransplant and examines interventions to improve outcomes in both adults and children.

Dr. Nevins is also a member of the graduate faculty for Clinical Research at the University.  He serves on the Medical Review Committee of the Renal Network of the Upper Midwest (Network 11), a peer-review group for the five state area.  He is also the center's representative to the North American Renal Transplant Cooperative study (NAPRTCS).
