Dr. Warwick is recognized for his expertise in the management and diagnosis of cystic fibrosis.  He served as Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Center at the University of Minnesota from its establishment in 1962 until 1999, developing it into one of the largest CF centers in the country.  He now serves as senior advisor to the CF Center.  Also noted for his expertise in pulmonary physiology and interpretation of pulmonary function, he directed the Pediatric Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) Laboratory since 1962, and is now Co-Director with Dr. Carlos Milla.  He developed the PFT Lab into the first computerized pulmonary function laboratory in Minnesota.  The PFT data obtained in the Lab is the core of the Minnesota CF database, which now holds more than 30 years of data.

Dr. Warwick received his MD from the University of Minnesota in 1954.  He completed his internship at White Cross Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and his pediatric residency at the University of Minnesota.  His advanced training in pulmonary physiology was done at Kings College Hospital in London and Midhurst Medical Research Institute in Sussex, U.K.  Dr. Warwick began his career at the University of Minnesota in 1959 and was appointed full professor in 1978.

He has received many awards, including:

1990 Annalisa Marzotto Endowed Professor for Cystic Fibrosis Care
1991 Medical Alley Award for Outstanding Achievement in Research and Development
1992 St. Olaf College Distinguished Alumnus Award
2003 CF Foundation (Minnesota Chapter) Angela Warner Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr. Warwick’s research has focused on creating tools to aid in the diagnosis and management of patients with chronic lung disease. Along with his co-inventor, Leland Hansen, Dr. Warwick holds several patents.  His concept of high frequency chest compression has advanced from the sine waveform to the square waveform and now to the triangle waveform.  The triangle waveform device is being further developed with RespirTech, Inc. He continues to research improvements in the delivery of high frequency chest compression in all of these waveforms.  Dr. Warwick’s development of sweat test technology led to collaboration with Medtronic Inc. and resulted in the Cystic Fibrosis Indicator System sweat test, which has now developed into the CF Quantum Patch in collaboration PolyChrome Medical, Inc.

Other current research projects include:

  • Spearheading an international project on aging and CF

  • Creating a pig with CF genes

  • Developing a technology for system repair of the CF gene mutation

  • Establish an effort independent pulmonary function test for newborns to all ages
