Goals

  • To become familiar with the practice of pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) and the evidence-based care of ill and injured children in a subspecialized environment
  • To gain exposure to and proficiency in the initial evaluation and treatment of the undifferentiated urgent and emergent pediatric patient
  • To become familiar with academic practice of pediatric emergency medicine through critical review and implementation of the literature, participation in educational experiences and exposure to the systems required to effectively administer pediatric emergency care.

Expectations
Participation in the elective will require:

  • Four shifts in the UMACH ED (3p-11p) per week
    • One weekend per month expected
  • 1-3 Shifts in the pediatric sedation unit (8a-4p) are available and recommended
  • One-on-one Resident - PEM attending interaction
    • Resident will see patients in conjunction with the attending
    • Under the direct supervision of the PEM Attending, Resident will complete most or all procedures as appropriate
    • Attending will retain primary responsibility for patient care and documentation
  • Prepare and present a short talk (30 minute) case review or topic review on a PEM topic at the monthly PEM Fellows’ Meeting
    • Currently 3rd Wednesday of the month, 1:30 – 3:00 pm
  • Read from the provided list of PEM articles
  • Read and become familiar with PEM Clinical Care Practice Guidelines
  • Watch at least 5 of the relevant NEJM instructional videos
  • Participate in a Mock Code at a time to be arranged
  • Participate in Continuity Clinic and Department of Pediatrics Conferences as otherwise expected by the pediatrics residency program
