| The University of Minnesota's curriculum stresses balance.
Our program benefits from a full diversity of clinical experiences that 4 hospital sites and many community experiences can offer.
Whether you pursue subspecialty training, primary care practice, or academic medicine, our pediatric residency program offers clinical and academic experiences to stimulate interests and support all professional goals. You will find your educational experiences occurring in various settings throughout the twin cities and greater Minnesota. This includes:
- Subspecialty experience at University of Minnesota Medical Center/University of Minnesota Children's Hospital, a division of Fairview
- General inpatient experience at Children's Minneapolis and St. Paul
- Urban inpatient and ambulatory experience at Hennepin County Medical Center
- Community experiences built into various rotations
Each site provides daily structured educational conferences to assure consistency of curriculum:
- Noon conference - This includes topics that are coordinated across sites. This defined core curriculum occurs on a yearly cycle, with 2 topics per week occurring at each site.
- Morning report - An opportunity to discuss diagnostically challenging cases with fellow residents and faculty.
- Grand Rounds - Weekly
- Mock codes - An opportunity to review, 1 - 2 times per month, common clinical scenarios encountered acutely by pediatricians.
- Journal club - This monthly conference involves a resident at each site identifying a clinical question they wish to answer and then using the format of Evidenced Based Medicine (EBM) to present the best evidence to answer the original clinical question.
- Monthly Board Review
- Monthly resident meetings - A format to update residents, seek their input, and address concerns that may exist.
In addition, each site has:
- Parking which is provided and paid for at all sites.
- Medical Education Directors and Chief Residents to support the educational and personal needs of the residents.
