"As a pediatric resident at the University of Minnesota, I find myself on a daily basis simultaneously challenged and supported in my quest to become a physician. Whether it is caring for a newborn with Hirschsprung's disease or meeting newly adopted twins from Ethiopia or providing well child checks at the county hospital, our experiences as residents are as unique as we are. There is never a dull moment! The chance to experience residency at multiple sites is invaluable in that it provides a wide range of opportunities to find out what kind of pediatric medicine you want to practice.
In choosing a residency program, it is important to look at a variety of factors, including the diversity of clinical experiences and the quality of teaching. But two factors that I find equally vital include enjoying the people you work with and having the chance to continue your life outside of the hospital. I truly believe that the University of Minnesota Peds program does a fantastic job of all of the above. "

"The U of M is a great place to be as a pediatric resident. My fellow residents are some of the nicest people I have met and that's important when we work with them during the day, through the middle of the night, and sometimes on holidays. The general pediatricians here have a true passion for pediatrics. Most are very easy-going, and that makes the stresses of residency so much easier to handle. Also, because residents are exposed to such a variety of clinical situations, we acquire a broad and complete perspective of the many facets of pediatric medicine.
Minneapolis is a great town in which to live. And I say "town," because it really is a city with the personality of a town. I especially enjoy the 6400 acres of city park system, it's perfect for anyone who likes to get outdoors while in an urban setting. People are very active here. At any time, you can always find people running, biking, rollerblading, or relaxing along the shore of one of the many lakes within the city. In addition, for the more culturally inclined, the Twin Cities area is a mecca for anyone interested in art, theater, music, and diverse ethnic restaurants. Please come visit! "

"I chose the U of Minnesota for a lot of reasons. I loved the balance of experiences that the program offered from the specialized tertiary care at the university hospital to the general pediatrics at the private children's hospitals and the county hospital. I was also really impressed by the leadership here in pediatrics. Now that residency has started I've discovered that one of the greatest aspects of this program is the other residents. I am repeatedly impressed by how smart, supportive, and fun the folks in my intern class have been. We look out for each other and enjoy working together. It makes coming to work fun. Finally, the Twin Cities are just an amazing place to live. There's so much to do (both in summer and winter) and yet the pace of living remains relaxed. This residency certainly provides a diverse set of opportunities to satisfy your goals for life both in and outside of the hospital. "

"I was looking for a program that was strong across the disciplines and offered a diverse patient population training sites. In addition, I had done work in international health and in quality improvement and was looking for a place where I would have opportunities and mentoring in these areas. The University of Minnesota offered all this, and everyone I met on my visit had a great, welcoming attitude. We also value our time out of the hospital, and the Twin Cities are a great place to live. There are great trails, lakes and rivers and fun cities."
