Clinical Director of the Clinic for Attention-Deficit and Learning Disorders

Professor of Psychiatry, Interim Director of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and Director of the Center for Prevention and Children's Mental Health at the University of Minnesota Academic Health Center. Dr. August received his Ph.D. in developmental psychology from Purdue University in 1975. He subsequently was awarded NIMH postdoctoral fellowships in behavioral genetics (University of Colorado) and psychiatric genetics (University of Iowa). Before taking a position at the University of Minnesota, Dr. August was an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.

Dr. August supervises psychological services for the Department of Psychiatry.  He is the child psychiatry coordinator and instructor for the continuing education program that presents a sequence of courses covering childhood mental disorders, treatment approaches, and community mental health perspectives.  Dr. August specializes in the area of Disruptive Behavioral Disorders, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder.

Dr. August specializes in the areas of developmental psychopathology and prevention science. Over the past 20 years, Dr. August has published numerous papers addressing issues of diagnosis and classification, comorbidity, epidemiology, natural history and treatment pertaining to children and adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

In recent years, he has expanded his scientific inquiry to include the prevention of drug abuse and antisocial behavior, where early childhood behavioral problems, like ADHD and aggressiveness, are conceptualized as potential risk factors. During this period, he has developed and validated an early-age-targeted prevention program that has been recognized as an exemplary drug abuse prevention program by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention's National Registry of Effective Prevention Programs and a model program by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Model Program's Guide Database.

At the present time, Dr. August is principal investigator of two federally funded research initiatives (NIDA, CSAP) in which he is conducting efficacy trials of the EARY RISERS Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention Program among high-risk children living in rural and urban communities.
