Definition of Terms
- Hemiparesis: Weakness on one side of the body, involving the arm and the leg.
- fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging): Use of a magnetic field and radio frequency pulses to produce a detailed picture of the brain and brain function.
- TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation): Painless, non-invasive brain stimulation used to measure the excitability of brain cells.
- rTMS (repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation): Use of brain stimulation repetitively as a research treatment in order to influence brain cell activity.
- CIT (Constraint-Induced Therapy): Therapy which includes immobilizing the stronger hand with a cast to encourage greater use of the affected hand. Activities are performed with the affected hand with guidance by a therapist in rehabilitation.
