Core Dermatology Residency Program, Department of Dermatology at the University of Minnesota

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Dermatology Residency Program at the University of Minnesota is committed to teaching and training residents to become excellent clinical and academic dermatologists. Our comprehensive training program provides the fundamental skills for you to become a superior dermatologist.

Unlike many other residency programs that offer only one or two teaching settings, the University of Minnesota program offers four teaching sites for you to explore many different practice styles, see a diverse group of patients, and encounter a vast number of dermatological disorders. This hands-on training provides you with an exceptional education. The program is based at the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota and residents rotate through the Dermatology services of University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview; Veterans Affairs Medical Center; Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC); and Park-Nicollet Health Services.

This larger multi-site program consists of a sizeable faculty, with many experts in differing fields. Working as a member of our team in an atmosphere of cooperation and trust, you will have the opportunity to train side by side with well-known, vibrant, and dedicated faculty.

RESIDENCY POSITIONS

All residency positions are offered through the National Residency Matching Program. Invitations to interview and appointments to the program are made by the Residency Selection Committee.  Interviews are typically conducted over the first two weekends in January.

We offer a specialty program, which commences at the PGY2 level. You will have the option to conduct your preliminary (PGY1) year at the institute of your choice, or in a transitional program at HCMC, located in Minneapolis. If you indicated that you wish to be considered for the transitional program at HCMC, you will be considered for this position without having to apply separately. We will be filling 3 - 4 positions to begin July 1, 2009 (start date at the University of Minnesota for PGY2).

We also offer a combined Dermatology/Internal Medicine Program, which was new in 2007.  One of five approved Med/Derm programs in the country, our graduates are eligible to take both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Dermatology certification exams.  The duration of this program is five years.  Applications are accepted via the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) only.  We will be filling two positions to begin July 1, 2009.
