Dr. Zhiguang Guo graduated from Zhongshan University of Medical Sciences in China and obtained his Ph.D. degree in Immunology from the University of Heidleberg in Germany. He received his post-doctoral training at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center at Chicago where he was trained in transplant immunology, islet transplantation and gene therapy. Currently, he is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Department of Surgery and Director of Basic Research of the Islet Transplant Program at the Diabetes Institute for Immunology and Transplantation at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Guo is the member of the Transplantation Society, the International Association of Pancreas and Islet Transplantation, the Cell Transplant Society, and the American Diabetes Association. He has received two Young Investigator Awards from the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (1997 and 1999) and one Young Investigator Award from the International Association of Pancreas and Islet Transplantation (2003). He has published over 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals.
His major research interests are experimental islet transplantation, transplant tolerance and gene therapy. He is developing clinically applicable protocol for inducing transplant tolerance. Currently, his research works are supported by National Institute of Health and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
