Welcome to the Duluth Site 3rd & 4th year Clinical Clerkship Program!
Clerkships are administered through the Department of Family Medicine in the University of Minnesota Medical School, Duluth. Efforts are directed by Jeff Adams, MD and coordinated by Bonnie Peterson.
Core and elective clinical clerkships for UM third and fourth year Medical Students at the Duluth site (DU) are recognized by Medical School Departments in the Twin Cities and Duluth clerkship students must fulfill the objectives as set out in the course descriptions for credit.
Duluth experiences take place in community physician offices and local hospitals and the surrounding area. Students benefit from the 1-1 relationship with Attendings, visits to remote sites, work with physicians in community settings, and time spent with the Family Practice Residents – the only residents in the Duluth.
The program has two furnished two-bedroom apartments where students may stay rent free while on rotation in Duluth. The apartments accommodate about 8 students at a time and students move in and out of the apartments as their rotations begin and end. Housing space is assigned on a first come/first served basis and students need to call the coordinator to reserve space. Being registered in a Duluth rotation is not sufficient. Although each apartment has a fully functioning kitchen, meals are also available at the hospital cafeterias and dining rooms at no charge to students.
Students registered for a Duluth Clerkship should email Bonnie Peterson (bpeters5@d.umn.edu) three weeks prior to the course start date for information about the orientation meeting and to make any needed housing arrangements. Books for each rotation will be loaned to students for the duration of their rotation. Attending and site assignments are discussed and parking permits and passes to local fitness facilities are distributed.
All students in Duluth rotations participate in Thursday afternoon sessions at the Medical School. Here, students gather with the Department of Family Medicine clinical faculty to present cases, share experiences and participate in skills workshops. The workshops are designed to address student's knowledge and skills either specific to their rotation or to competencies essential for graduation.
