Research, Medical School Duluth at the University of Minnesota

Nothing propels advances in health care more than research. Understanding medical mysteries, creating new therapies and achieving cures, all begin with research. The University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth has unique opportunities to study issues affecting Minnesota and the world. With its focus on rural health and its deep connection to special populations, the school is well-equipped to conduct innovative, effective research- research with a nationwide impact. Conducting these studies and training exceptional physicians and graduate students only happens via contributions by outstanding faculty members and students. Faculty recently recognized for outstanding research contributions include the following:

Dr. Joycelyn Dorscher,  Department of Family Medicine, is president-elect of the Association of American Indian Physicians;

Dr. Kendall Wallace,  Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, is president of the Society of Toxicology in 2005-2006;

Dr. Mustafa al'Absi,  Department of Behavioral Sciences, received the 2004 American Psychosomatic Society's Herbert Weiner Early Career Award for Contributions to Psychosomatic Medicine;

Dr. Barbara Elliott,  Department of Family Medicine, was named Researcher of the Year by the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians in 2002; and

Dr. Lester Drewes,  Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, is the recipient of a prestigious Jacob Javits Award from the National Institutes of Health (1997-2005) for his project "Modulation of monocarboxylic acid transporters."

Faculty currently recognized as experts in their fields are serving as Editors of the following journals:

Dr. Kendall Wallace,  Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, is editor of the Journal "Toxicology" and Associate Editor of the journals "Cardiovascular Toxicology" and "Mitochondrion;"

Dr. Arthur Aufderheide,  Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is Editor of the journal "Chungara;"

Dr. Mustafa al'Absi,  Department of Behavioral Sciences is Associate Editor of the Journal of Biological Psychology.

Faculty recognized as national experts in their field and currently serving as reviewers on study sections at the National Institutes of Health or Health Resources and Services Administration include the following:

Dr. Lucia Barker,  Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, serves on special emphasis panel ZRG1 IDM-H90

Dr. James Boulger,  Department of Behavioral Sciences, serves on the Predoctoral Training Grant, Division of Medicine (HRSA)

Dr. Benjamin Clarke,  Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, serves on the Minority Access to Research Careers Review Committee of NIGMS

Dr. Edward Perkins, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, serves on the National Cancer Institute Academic Public Private Partnership Planning Grants (ZCA1)

Dr. Joseph Prohaska,  Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, serves on Integrative Nutrition and Metabolic Processes (INMP)
