The Rural Health Scholars Program (RHSP) is an exciting pilot being developed to train the right number of physicians with the right specialties and skills to meet the needs of the rural and rural American Indian communities of Minnesota. We are following recommendations of the Institute of Medicine and Future of Family Medicine reports, incorporating information technology and new learning methods as well as drawing on the years of experience in rural medical education at the Twin Cities and Duluth campuses. This program will involve community-based learning, a rural curriculum and the development of strong procedural skills and information technology skills toward high quality evidence-based practice. Our goal is to insure a continuing supply of the physicians needed to provide healthcare access and leadership in rural communities. The Rural Health Scholars Program report is planned for fall of 2006 with elements of the program beginning in the 2006-07 academic year.
