Awards for Excellence in Geriatric Medicine
These awards were established by a Department of Family Medicine and Community Health faculty member to recognize superior research on aging and geriatric medicine. The University of Minnesota Medical School awards a $1,000 scholarship to the two medical students submitting the best paper on a topic dealing with the health care of older adults.

Medical Student Award for Contributions to Family Medicine
The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians recognizes one fourth-year medical student for family medicine activities on a local, community, medical school, state or national level.

MAFP: Mersy Medical Student Summer Research Externship Program
The MAFP provides a stipend of $2,000 to a medical student to conduct a research project in a primary care clinic setting under the guidance of a family physician mentor, who also receives $500. First- and second-year medical students are especially encouraged to apply.

American Board of Family Medicine: Pisacano Scholarship
Provides leadership training and up to $28,000 funding per year for 10 outstanding fourth-year medical students nationwide for up to five years. Students must make a commitment to the specialty of family medicine. The funding program is designed to reimburse medical school debt incurred by the student at the conclusion of the student's residency. The Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota Medical School had a recipient of this prestigious award in 2000.

Minnesota Medical Foundation: Undergraduate Student Research Grant
Student grants support University of Minnesota Medical School students who are pursuing careers in academic research and medicine. A stipend of $4,000 for 12 weeks of research conducted during free or elective periods is awarded to third or fourth-year medical students. A stipend of $3,000 for 8 weeks is available to first-year medical students for the summer after their first year. Medical school faculty members provide advice and counsel for student investigative work. A medical school faculty member must serve as project supervisor and provide laboratory facilities.
Deadline: January 4, May 1, September 1 for third and fourth-year medical students. February 15 for first-year medical students.
Scientific Assembly Grants for the AAFP Scientific Assembly
The Scientific Assembly is the national meeting of the American Academy of Family Medicine, geared toward continuing medical education for practicing physicians and residents. Up to 15 pre-Assembly awards of $1,000 are given. The purpose of the grant is to help defray travel expenses of bringing an exhibit to Assembly. Exhibit application must be submitted by a family medicine resident or medical student. Limit one grant per exhibit. AAFP Scientific Assembly meeting is Sept. 17-21, 2008.
