Barry Weiss’s 2002 Family Medicine article describes an alarming decline in the research productivity of family medicine faculty. If not reversed, there is serious concern about the future viability of academic family medicine and the impact family medicine will be able to have on the shape of health care. Our fellowship was created to help meet this need.

We invite applications to a three-year fellowship that trains family physicians for careers in academic research. Although the focus is research, skills in education, communication, administration, and professional academics are also addressed to ensure our fellows' success in tenure track positions. Two fellows are accepted each year.

The Program

• Formal coursework, including completion of an MS in clinical research
• Seminars on literature searches, scholarly writing, academic/research ethics, project management, academic leadership, funding mechanisms
• Mentored research projects with experienced primary care researchers
• Grant proposal development and submission
• Research dissemination through presentations at national conferences and publications in peer-reviewed journals
• Training in curriculum design, teaching, evaluation, adult learning theories
• Opportunities to network with experts in other areas
• Patient care/precepting residents one day/week

Stipend

• Up to $62,036 annually, depending upon years of experience
• Moonlighting is allowed

Eligibility

• Residency-trained, boarded, or board-eligible in family medicine
