IRB Requirements, Department of Family Medicine in the Medical School at the University of Minnesota

Effective July 1, 2007, the University of Minnesota IRB requires that clinical research protocols undergo scientific review prior to submission for IRB review. The scientific review must be performed by expert, independent reviewers to determine scientific validity and appropriateness.

Researchers affiliated with the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health must follow the Post Award IRB Application Process to ensure appropriate scientific review and documentation of all DFMCH research. Although researchers who are filing Exempt IRB applications do not need to obtain scientific review, they must still follow the outlined procedures to notify the DFMCH about the research. Email questions about this process to DFMCHIRB@umn.edu.
