Mark R. Bixby, MD, Program Director

Background: Dr. Bixby spent ten years in rural private practice in northwestern Wisconsin. During his years in private practice he developed a wide range of procedural skills, including C-section, appendectomy, laparoscopy, and vasectomy, and others. In addition, he was active in clinic management. He joined the faculty in June of 1991 and was named director in 1997.
Medical interests: Clinical research and the development of teaching skills. He hopes to provide special encouragement and guidance to those residents who desire a rural family medicine practice.
Michael R. Wootten, MD, Associate Program Director

Residency: North Memorial Health Care Family Medicine
Background: Prior to joining the faculty, Dr. Wootten practiced for three years in the North Carolina Appalachian Mountains and four years in suburban Minneapolis. He routinely teaches procedural skills, such as sigmoidoscopy, OB ultrasound, and other obstetric procedures.
Medical interests: Obstetrics, geriatrics, and chronic disease management.
Geoffrey T. Abbott, MSW, Behavioral Science Faculty

Background: Mr. Abbott has been at North Memorial since 1977. Through precepting and video reviewing, team meeting and seminars, he helps residents understand patient/physician communication dynamics to increase their awareness of psychosocial factors. He also helps residents effectively utilize community resources. His areas of practice include psychotherapy and hypnosis, with special interests in the treatment of family violence. He is available to residents for personal guidance.
Jerica Berge, PhD, Behavioral Science Faculty

Background: Dr. Berge is a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in collaborative care and family health issues. She has had specialized clinical training in child play therapy, loss and grief issues, critical incident stress management, couples and sex therapy, parenting, depression, anxiety, group therapies, and working with families struggling with chronic illnesses.
Medical interests: Reducing health disparities through community engagement and participatory action research, resiliency of children with chronic illnesses, and clinical effectiveness of couples therapy/family therapy in reducing biopsychosocial problems.
Kent D. Bergh, MD, Physician Faculty

Background: Following residency and two years in South Dakota with the Indian Health Service, Dr. Bergh practiced for seven years in rural Minnesota. He was a faculty development fellow in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health from 1986 to 1988 and subsequently was appointed to the faculty.
Medical interests: Sociocultural aspects of illness, physician-patient communication, preventive medicine, patient education, and community geriatric care.

Background: He joined the North faculty team to continue teaching and working with his colleagues serving the North Minneapolis community.
Medical interests: End of life care, diabetes, cultural issues in medicine, and procedures.
Patrick A. Keenan, MD, Physician Faculty

Residency: Anker Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota
Background: Dr. Keenan joined the faculty on a part-time basis in 1996 and became full-time in September, 1997. Prior to joining the program he had been in private practice for twenty years. He has served two stints as a mission doctor in South Africa and one as a WHO epidemiologist in India. Dr. Keenan has gained considerable expertise in case finding of HIV disease in at-risk populations.
Medical interests: Third-world medicine and urgent care.
Barbara A. Leone, MD, Physician Faculty

Background: For thirteen years, Dr. Leone's clinical practice was at the Model Cities Health Center, a non-profit community clinic in St. Paul. There she served as staff physician, preceptor, and medical director. Dr. Leone was a full-time faculty member at Regions Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program for five years.
Medical interests: Her interests include maternal and child health, and improving health disparities.
Other interests: She is very active in her church, River of Life Christian Church, and has a daughter and one grandson.
Jody L. Lounsbery, PharmD

Residencies: Ohio State University College of Pharmacy, Community Care Residency and University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Ambulatory Care Residency.
Background: Assistant professor, University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy.
Medical Interests: Women’s health, diabetes, and mental health.
Jean Moon, PharmD, Pharmacology Faculty

Background: During residency, Dr. Moon practiced at the Community University Health Care Center and Broadway Family Medicine. She currently has a joint position with the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy and the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health as an assistant professor and clinical specialist.
Medical interests: Asthma, smoking cessation, diabetes, anticoagulation, and cultural competency.
David E. Olson, MD, Physician Faculty

Background: Dr. Olson was a faculty physician at St. Michael's family medicine residency for one year. In 2002, he completed a primary care sports medicine fellowship at Notre Dame University. Currently, he is a team physician with Patrick Henry and Roseville Area high schools, Minneapolis Community College, University of Minnesota, and the Minnesota Vikings.
Other interests: Camping, fishing, snow boarding, and spending time with his family.

Background: He has worked in tribal areas in India and in rural Mississippi. In 1996, he received the AAFP/Bristol Myers Squibb Award for Excellence in Graduate Medical Education.
Medical interests: Health care delivery systems and public health/primary care interfaces.
Rahshana Price-Isuk, MD, Physician Faculty

Background: Upon completion of her residency, Dr. Price-Isuk joined the faculty at North Memorial to continue to give back to the community in which she was raised.

Kevin Raff, MD, Physician Faculty

Background: Dr. Raff worked locum tenens in both Virginia and Hawaii before joining a rural Mayo Health System site in Springfield, Minnesota where he practiced the full scope of family medicine including emergency medicine. He joined our faculty in January 2007.
Medical interests: Obstetrics, pediatric and adolescent health, and procedural medicine.
Bean Robinson, PhD, Behavioral Science Faculty

Background: Dr. Robinson completed her postdoctoral training in Asian American mental health and research methods at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She is an associate professor at the University of Minnesota Program in Human Sexuality and has authored numerous scientific articles, reports, manuals, and monographs.
