Purpose:
Short-term disability insurance is provided at no cost to all residents and fellows. Coverage is automatic and effective upon program start date.
Policy/Procedure:
Short-term disability is defined as an injury, illness, or pregnancy continuing beyond fourteen consecutive days during which a resident or fellow is unable to perform programmatic responsibilities and is under the ongoing care of a physician or practitioner other than him/herself during this period. The plan pays 70% of your base stipend up to a maximum weekly benefit of $1000.00 and benefits can be paid up to eleven weeks. The plan pays for both partial and total disability.
While an individual is on short-term disability, the department will continue to pay the program portion of the medical and dental benefits; the resident or fellow will retain responsibility for paying his/her portion of the medical and dental benefits.
Departments may not supplement any disability benefit.
For residents and fellows beginning their training program in academic year 2007-2008, this policy is effective upon program start date.
For residents and fellows who began their training prior to academic year 2007-2008 requests for short-term disability submitted to a program prior to October 1, 2007 will be processed according to the 2006-2007 Program Manuals. Any requests submitted on or following October 1, 2007 will be processed according to the new policy contained in the 2007-2008 Program and Institution Manuals.
