Dr. Rizwan Romee attended Government Medical College, Srinagar, India, receiving his MBBS in 2003. He began an initial residency at Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar, India during which time he studied the results of arsenic trioxide treatment in patients with acute pro-myelocytic leukemia. These results were encouraging and arsenic trioxide is now offered as a first line treatment for APML at that institute. In 2004 Dr. Romee relocated to the United States and began a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota. He sought out a research elective in the laboratory of Dr. Dan Kaufman (Stem Cell Institute, University of Minnesota) and received an American Society of Hematology (ASH) Trainee Research Award to fund this work. During his project studying the role of Wnt proteins in stem cell differentiation and maturation he learned combined molecular biology and cell culture techniques to measure the activity of Wnt proteins. Dr. Romee joined the Hematology, Oncology and Transplantation fellowship program in 2008.
