Atsushi Asakura, Ph.D., Lillehei Heart Institute at the University of Minnesota

Dr. Asakura received his Ph.D. at University of Tokyo and National Institute of Neuroscience in Japan with Dr. Yo-ichi Nabeshima where he learned the molecular biology of skeletal muscle differentiation. Dr. Asakura trained at the post-doctoral level at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center with Dr. Stephen Tapscott. His post-doctoral studies involved the transcription factors for muscle development during early embryogenesis. Dr. Asakura then trained at the senior post-doctoral level at McMaster University and the Ottawa Health Research Institute with Dr. Michael Rudnicki where he started project on skeletal muscle stem cells that contribute to muscle regeneration. He is appointed Assistant Professor in Cardiovascular Division, Department of Medicine at University of Minnesota and study on stem cells for heart and skeletal muscle regeneration.
