The Muscular Dystrophy Center Facts:
Known as the Center for Muscle and Muscle Disorders (CMMD) since 1996, it's purpose has been to improve research, clinical and teaching activities related to muscle
In enhancing efforts and strengthening collaborative, CMMD evolved to form the Muscular Dystrophy Center (MDCenter)
Initiated in 2003, the Paul and Sheila Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Center has grown over the years and continues to expand
The Center is comprised of 24 faculty members from 14 departments and 4 schools including Medical School, Veterinary School, Institute of Technology, and College of Biological Sciences
MDCenter faculty members have 20 NIH grants, 2 NIH training grants and more than $25 million in total direct costs for muscle related research
Philanthropic support has raised $100,000 and had received $125,000 institutional support
MDCenter collaborates with other educational institutions, government agencies, private sectors and non-profit organizations to facilitate research, education, and service activities related to muscular dystrophies
For the past 10 years, the center has co-sponsored the Annual Muscular Dystrophy Center Symposium that attracts more that 100 researchers and participants and features distinguished speakers that are recognized internationally
The monthly Distinguished Visiting Speaker Series and the biweekly MDCenter Seminar Series facilitate interaction, cooperation, and collaboration among researchers
Collaboration with local resources such as Muscular Dystrophy Association, Gillette Children's Hospital, and University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview has facilitated outreach and clinical services.
