MED 2010, the Medical School at the University of Minnesota

Learner-centered education for patient-centered care

At the University of Minnesota Medical School, we are proud of our accomplishments in medical education. Yet, the world does not stand still.

  • Not only do students learn differently today than in the past, technology and education theory continue to advance swiftly as well.
  • Health care needs and delivery have changed greatly and will continue to evolve.
  • Our medical students deserve the most flexible and up-to-date education possible to develop a strong foundation as they become life-long learners in their medical careers.

To best educate the physicians of tomorrow, we have launched the MED 2010 project to transform medical education. MED 2010 is a comprehensive initiative that emphasizes competency-driven learning experiences throughout the span of medical education.

At the University of Minnesota, we are creating a continuum of learning for future physicians, from pre-medical to practitioners. This shift from a time-based to a competency-based medical education program allows students to tailor their educations to their unique starting points, paces of progress, and interests.
