MS in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology in the Medical School at the University of Minnesota

Program

The master's degree program in Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology is a multidisciplinary program designed to prepare the medical technologist or basic science undergraduate for a career in research, teaching or industry within a specialized area of laboratory medicine.

Students in the CLS program concentrate their studies in one of five major areas: clinical chemistry, hematology, immunology, molecular genetics, or microbiology. Within each of these disciplines, flexibility is maintained, allowing students to choose coursework to meet individual requirements and research interests.  A minor or supporting area is also required, complementing the expertise acquired in the specialty area. Experience in teaching and/or management is also available. The M.S. degree in Clinical Laboratory Science is a degree with an emphasis on research and requires completion of a substantial research project and thesis.

Resources

The department's 100,000 square feet of laboratory and research space includes animal, cell culture, and computing facilities. Research laboratories are equipped with state of the art instrumentation needed for cell and molecular research. The Medical School also has a microchemical facility with capability for synthesizing and sequencing peptides and DNA.

Financial Aid

A limited number of research assistantships are available on a competitive basis. All graduate research assistants at the University of Minnesota with appointments of at least 25% receive a tuition benefit and health insurance equal to twice the percentage of their appointment and also qualify for resident tuition. Nonresident students of color and disadvantaged students who have a GPA of 3.0 for the undergraduate degree may be eligible to apply for a waiver of nonresident tuition. Contact the Graduate School Outreach Office, 333 Johnston Hall, (612) 625-6858, e-mail gsoeo@umn.edu for more information.

How to Apply

Applications are welcomed from students with a basic science or medical technology degree, including courses in organic, inorganic and biochemistry, physics, mathematics, and biology. Previous laboratory experience is advantageous. Students from non-English speaking countries must submit a TOEFL examination score. All applicants must submit scores from the general aptitude section of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), three letters of recommendation, and an autobiographical outline including a statement of career goals to the following address:
