Epilepsy Care Center, Department of Neurology in the Medical School at the University of Minnesota

The Epilepsy Care Center provides care for adults and pediatric patients with epilepsy.  We specialize in treatment of the whole patient through a multi-disciplinary team approach to care.  Patients benefit from our access to the latest research on the cause, diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy.

A team approach to care ...

In addition to board-certified neurologists, the Epilepsy Care Center staff includes a nurse clinician with specialized training in epilepsy, a pharmacologist, registered EEG technologists and health psychologists.

Comprehensive, coordinated care is provided to treat the whole patient - mind, body and spirit.  Care is tailored to each individual patient with education and support as key elements in the care plan.

Our Team

Miguel E. Fiol, M.D., is medical director of the Epilepsy Care Center.  A board-certified neurologist and member of University of Minnesota Physicians, Dr. Fiol completed his residency in neurology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and an epilepsy fellowship at the University of Minnesota.  He is an Associate Professor of Neurology in the Department of Neurology at the University of Minnesota Medical School.

Stephen Holloway, M.D., Ph.D., is a board-certified neurologist and Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Minnesota.  He trained in neurology at Yale University.  While on faculty at Yale, he developed expertise in newer methods of seizure and EEG analysis utilizing advances in digital and computer technology.  He believes patients find the best solutions to their problems when the doctor and patient work together to develop individualized treatment plans for epilepsy with an emphasis on education.

Jeannine Conway, Pharm.D., is an Assistant Professor in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota Medical School working with the Epilepsy Care Center.  Dr. Conway is available for pharmaceutical care consultations and assistance for patients with epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurological conditions with complex drug issues.

Cindy Gilbertson, B.S.N., R.N., is the Epilepsy Care Center’s nurse coordinator.  She has 16 years of experience working with chronically ill patients and their families.  She provides education and support to patients and their families in the hospital and clinic settings.  With an emphasis on maintaining communication between patients and families, she is accessible as a communication link between patients, families and other health care team members.

The EEG technologists of the Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory and the Epilepsy Care Center include Heather Brophy, R.E.E.G.T., Erin Hable, R.E.E.G.T., Becki Pope, R.E.E.G.T., and Sandra Vasquez, R.E.E.G.T.

William Robiner, Ph.D., A.B.P.P., L.P., a clinical psychologist with board certification in health psychology, is the director of health psychology in the Department of Neurology and an associate professor of clinical neurology.  Dr. Robiner provides consultation and counseling for the psychological aspects of medical and neurological conditions.  He collaborates with the care team at the Epilepsy Care Center to help patients and their families understand and cope effectively with seizures and related health concerns.

Progress through research

Through our affiliation with the University of Minnesota, we have access to the latest technological and treatment developments in surgery of epilepsy, diagnostic methods such as MR neuro-imaging, new anti-convulsants, and psychological treatments for epilepsy-associated emotional issues.

Patient-centered comprehensive care

At the Epilepsy Care Center, we provide consultation to assess seizure or seizure-like activity in a comfortable setting for patients.  A diagnosis and treatment plan will be instituted and provided to the patients and referring physician.  Some patients may need to be admitted to the hospital for further testing including state-of-the-art video EEG monitoring of spells.  Patients return to their primary care physicians with their treatment plan and continue consultations at the Epilepsy Care Center when necessary.

The key component of each patient’s treatment plan is improvement of quality of life by addressing physical, psychological, social and employment issues.
