The Department of Neurology offers a one to two year fellowship in Neurocritical Care, based at Hennepin County Medical Center and University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview.
This program is designed to provide comprehensive training in the care and management of critically-ill neuroscience patients. General critical care experience is complemented by rotations in other intensive care units. Close clinical collaboration with the vascular and endovascular program as well as the neurosurgical service is expected.
To be eligible for the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties(UCNS) Neurocritical Care certification, a 2 year fellowship is encouraged.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Rotations
Call
Fellow takes at-home call on alternating weeks.
Research
Fellows are required to execute at least one research project a year. By the fourth month of the fellowship year, fellows are expected to identify their projects and to select faculty mentors. Fellows formally present their projects at a graduation/educational symposium in May/June. A very active epidemiological, clinical, and basic research program focused on cerebrovascular diseases provides opportunities for research.
Conferences
There are regular conferences which are attended by all fellows in the program.
There are several other optional conferences available.
DEPARTMENT AND FACULTY
This fellowship joins the Department of Neurology’s other graduate training programs, which have continuously graduated neurology and subspecialty trainees since the 1940s. Among the significant strengths of our program are the range and depth of the clinical experience provided at several teaching hospitals Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) and University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview (UMMC) for the NeuroCritical Care program; the devotion of the full-time faculty at each of these hospitals to teaching, patient care, and scholarship; and the focus on both clinical and basic research in the midst of a first-rank neuroscience community.
