Dr. Haines represents the Department and the Medical School at the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of the Department of Neurosurgery at Seoul National University.
The Department of Neurosurgery at the Seoul National University College of Medicine was founded by in 1957 by Professor Bo Sung Sim after returning to Seoul from two years of training in neurosurgery under William Peyton and Lyle French at the University of Minnesota. His work in Minnesota was part of the International Cooperation and Administration program designed to assist the Republic of Korea in recovering from the devastation of the Korean War. The University of Minnesota School of Medicine developed a special relationship with Seoul National University and provided training, both in Minneapolis and in Seoul, in many specialties of medicine. Subsequently, Professors Kil Soo Choi and Jeong Wha Chu also came to Minnesota for training in neurosurgery, returning to join the faculty in Seoul. Professor Choi became the second chairman of the Department.
Rarely has an investment in people paid off so handsomely. The Department in Seoul now has 25 faculty in three hospitals and trains 7 fellows and 21 residents. It has clinical, educational and research efforts in all subspecialties of neurosurgery and the work is conducted at the highest international standard. Dr. Haines presented greetings and congratulations, complimented the Department on its spectacular growth and excellence and expressed hope for strengthening the continuing bond of friendship and collegial cooperation between the departments.
