The department of neurosurgery invites qualified fourth year medical students to participate in the externship program at the University of Minnesota. The rotation is four weeks long, rigorous, requires call, and the students are expected to perform at almost an intern level. A strong understanding of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and neuropathology grounded in the first two years of medical school is required. Each year, we take several students from outside the university for this experience.
The objective is to prepare the students for a career in neurosurgery, particularly in academic neurosurgery. Presentations are required. Participation in research, both clinical and basic science is abundantly available with two large neurosurgical laboratories.
Students interested in the program should contact the Residency Coordinator at the 612-624-0912.
