MINNEAPOLIS/ST PAUL (April 11, 2008) -- University of Minnesota associate professor Michael Miner, Ph.D., will be honored with the Professional Service Award from the Minnesota Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (MNATSA) at their annual conference on Friday, April 11, 2008.

Miner’s leadership, influence, and initiative in the research and treatment of sexual abusers will be recognized at the MNATSA annual conference, to be held at the Northland Inn in Minneapolis.

“The award is presented this year in recognition and gratitude for Dr. Miner’s dedication to inspire students, conduct research and influence public policy, in an effort to improve the assessment, treatment and management of sexual abusers,” said Jannine Hebert, president of MNATSA. “As a professor, researcher, and clinician, Dr. Miner has positively influenced the direction of sex offender treatment in Minnesota.”

Miner is the principal investigator researching risk factors for sexual abuse perpetration through a grant from the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  His research also includes using functional MRI to study compulsive sexual behavior.  He has coordinated sex offender treatment through the University’s Program in Human Sexuality since 1997.  Miner has served on a number of advisory boards and committees for the Minnesota Department of Corrections, the Minnesota Department of Health, and Stop It Now! Minnesota. He has also served on review committees for the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.  Miner is vice president of the International Association for the Treatment of Sexual Offenders, representative at large for the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers, and on the board of directors of MNATSA.

He became involved in sex offender research as the experimental psychologist for the Sex Offender Treatment and Evaluation Project, highly regarded as the most rigorous outcomes study to date.  He has published numerous articles and book chapters on sex offender treatment, forensic assessment, instrument development, HIV prevention, and evaluation methodology.  Miner has edited two books with Eli Coleman, Ph.D., on sex offender treatment and serves on the editorial boards of Sexual Abuse: A Journal of Research and Treatment, Archives of Sexual Behavior, and the International Journal of Sexual Health.  He is one of the founding editors of Sex Offender Treatment, the e-journal of the International Association for the Treatment of Sexual Offenders.
