THE TWIN CITIES INTEGRATED RESIDENCY PROGRAM IN OBSTETRICS, GYNECOLOGY AND WOMEN’S HEALTH Phillip N. Rauk, M.D., Program Director Tammy Pederson, Resident Coordinator The goal of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Integrated Residency in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health is to produce competent, sensitive, compassionate and respectful Obstetrician/Gynecologists who will enhance and further the knowledge of women’s health care. -Missionstatement Universityof Minnesota, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Minnesota Medical School offers a four-year residency training program designed to provide a broad exposure to all aspects of health care for women. The goals of the program are to aid resident physicians in acquiring the following:
As the only obstetrics & Gynecology residency in the Twin Cities—and one of only two programs in the state—our residents are in a unique position to take advantage of one of the best healthcare environments in the country. They work with some of the finest physicians, surgeons and researchers in the area. Our graduates repeatedly tell us that this residency prepared them extremely well for life in their OB/GYN practice. Other strengths of our program include: strong educational experience, outstanding obstetrical and surgical experience, training at multiple sites, pro-choice, an excellent fellowship placement and a diverse patient population. The following are a few opportunities we provide our residents during their four years of training: Rotation Schedule The sequence of assignments has been planned to ensure that residents have increasing responsibilities and autonomy in patient management. With rotations at six hospitals, our residents have access to thousands of births, major and minor surgeries, and specialty cases in gynecology oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, mature women’s health, and urogynecology.
Call Schedule Call rosters are developed in conjunction with the Master Rotation Schedule and detail which resident will cover call which institution. Call rosters are designed with the RRC guidelines for resident call. Each individual call pool is made by a resident (usually a member of the most senior class that is a part of the pool). Residents cover call at three institutions: University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC), Regions Hospital (RH) and Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) via a system of night float rotations and call pools for the weekends. Residents take call from home for UMMC Gynecologic Oncology. Call must occur no more frequently than every 3rd night averaged over a 4-week period. Continuity Clinic The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health offers a true continuity clinic where they gain primary and preventative care experience. Continuity clinics are attended by all the residents starting the second half of year one for one-half day a week throughout heir four years of training except for the weeks they are on night float. Each resident is assigned to a continuity clinic at either UMMC Women’s Health Clinic, Hennepin County Medical Center or Regions Clinic. These clinics are supervised by OB/GYN generalist faculty members. Residents are released from all clinical duties when at their continuity clinic. Didactic Time The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health provides a rigorous educational program for our residents. Residents are excused from clinical duties to attend weekly didactics on Monday afternoons. Didactics are comprised of lectures, M&M’s, resident-lead text review, and an occasional hands-on skills training session. Lectures are presented by faculty, outside speakers, fellows, and residents.
