Dr. Doughman was raised in Bussey, Iowa. He received a degree in Music Education from Drake University and graduated from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He interned at Los Angeles County General Hospital and practiced general medicine before becoming a resident in internal medicine at the University of Iowa. His interest changed to ophthalmology, and he completed his residency at the University of Iowa. He was Chief of the Ophthalmology Department at the United States Public Health Service Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, and then completed a dual corneal fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Department of Cornea Research, Retina Foundation, Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Doughman joined the Department of Ophthalmology in 1972 and served as Chairman from 1979 to January 1990. He was co-investigator on early Photorefractive Keratectomy studies leading to present day LASIK procedures. He serves as the Medical Director of the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank and is Chief of Ophthalmology at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center. Dr. Doughman was also president of the Contact Lens Association of America through 1997 and now serves as the Executive Vice President.
