The appointment of Dr. Jay H. Krachmer as Professor and Chair and holder of the Mackall-Scheie Research Chair in Ophthalmology became effective in July 1992. Dr. Krachmer was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, and then returned to Iowa where he interned and completed a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Iowa. In 1974 he completed a one-year cornea and external disease fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Krachmer was a member of the faculty in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Iowa from 1974 to 1992. He specializes in clinical teaching and research aspects of cornea and external disease of the eye.

Publications

Publication (1997) of 3-volume "single source" text on the cornea, entitled Cornea by Jay H. Krachmer, Mark J. Mannis and Edward J. Holland. The book is published by Mosby -Year Book.

Companion atlas (1995) entitled Cornea: Color Atlas by Jay H. Krachmer and David Palay. Also published by Mosby -Year Book.

Publication of a soft-cover atlas/reference guide (1997), Ophthalmology for the Primary Care Physician by David A. Palay and Jay H. Krachmer. The book is published by Mosby -Year Book. A valuable reference for primary health care personnel treating ocular conditions. The book is made available to all third and fourth year medical students doing their ophthalmology rotation in the Department.

Publication of a 7-volume text on Ophthalmology (2000-) entitled The Requisites in Ophthalmology. Series editor, Mosby -Year Book.
