Dr. Michael Lee was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He graduated with honors with a degree in biophysics from The Johns Hopkins University. He received his medical degree and ophthalmology residency from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Dr. Lee completed a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School, where he received a distinguished teaching award. He was supported by the Heed Foundation and was recognized as the fellow of the Society of Heed Fellows. In 2002, he joined the neuro-ophthalmology service at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he received the World Class Employee Award in Spring 2005.
Dr. Michael Lee joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in September 2005 as the director of the Neuro-ophthalmology service. He became the Director of the Eye Pathophysiology course and the Ophthalmology Clinical Rotation for the University of Minnesota Medical School. He has served as a peer-reviewer for several journals and taught courses at the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meetings.
Dr. Lee sees patients and conducts research in neuro-ophthalmology. Research interests include benign essential blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, and optic nerve disease. Areas of clinical interest include blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, optic neuritis, ischemic optic neuropathy, double vision, eye pain, pseudoumor cerebri and giant cell arteritis.
