The Cornea and External Disease Fellowship emphasizes medical and surgical treatment of corneal and external disease, refractive surgery, and management of intraocular lens complication, as well as other complications of cataract surgery. The fellow is introduced to clinical and laboratory research and is encouraged to actively participate. The fellow’s time is split between the University of Minnesota and Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center.
The Fellowship Program at the University of Minnesota is a one-year program, beginning in July. Each year the Department accepts two fellows. There are three full-time faculty members on the Cornea/External Disease Service; Drs. Stephen Kaufman, Donald Doughman and Jay Krachmer.
A research project is required of the fellow each year. In addition, the fellow takes responsibility for some of the resident and medical school teaching.
