Ophthalmology Residency
The University of Minnesota offers a three-year clinically-oriented training program in ophthalmology. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, residents will have received the training and experience necessary to function independently as ophthalmologists in the community and will be proficient in the more common ophthalmic surgical procedures. Residents will also be eligible to take the examination for board certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
During the three-year program, training is given through the University of Minnesota Medical Center and the affiliated teaching hospitals which include Hennepin County Medical Center, Regions Medical Center, and the Veterans Administration Hospital. Four residents enter the program each July.
The initial clinical experience begins with six months at the University of Minnesota Hospitals or six months at either Hennepin County Medical Center or Regions Medical Center. During the first six months, the faculty expects that residents will become familiar with a basic eye examination and the various instruments that are used in the examination. At the University of Minnesota Medical Center, coursework in strabismus management, anatomy, histology and embryology is also scheduled.
