Welcome to the University of Minnesota Medical School Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program
It is the objective of the graduate program in orthopaedic surgery to provide a comprehensive educational experience in the management of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system for the physician seeking accreditation as an orthopaedic surgeon. It is the goal of this program to provide educational and research opportunities for those candidates with an interest in an academic career in orthopaedic surgery and provide the candidate interested in the practice of orthopaedic surgery a balanced educational experience.
This program has 8 positions available for each residency class. The residency positions are offered through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) through the match at the G-1 level. Our program provides a comprehensive overview to treat disorders and injuries to the musculoskeletal system. Our program includes education at 6 institutions, with a faculty over 60 regionally and nationally known orthopaedic surgeons.
University of Minnesota at Fairview-University Medical Center (Riverside campus) offers specialty service rotations in spine, sports, tumor, foot and ankle, hand, and adult reconstruction. This is the flagship hospital for the residency program and is the site for weekly program-wide grand rounds and core curriculum lectures.
Hennepin County Medical Center provides trauma rotations for the residency program. It is a level 1 trauma center with a faculty of 8 fellowship trained traumatologists. A wide range of multi-system trauma is treated with over 2500 operative cases and 17,000 orthopaedic visits annually.
Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare provides pediatric orthopaedic rotations for the residency program with a full time faculty of 7 fellowship trained pediatric orthopaedic surgeons.
Veterans Affairs Medical Center is the primary location for the adult reconstruction rotations. The Minneapolis VA Medical Center does more total joints than any other VA Medical Center in the country. This provides a well supervised experience for the resident to learn primary and revision total joint arthroplasties.
Regions Hospital provides both a level 1 trauma rotation, as well as a private hospital environment for adult reconstructive, sports, and isolated trauma.
TRIA Orthopaedic Center is a specialty orthopaedic hospital. This center includes rotations in sports, hand, and foot and ankle. 
In 2003, our program expanded to 8 residents per year. Rotations of 6 months length during the G2 and G3 years provides a comprehensive background in general orthopaedics working with faculty over a longer rotation to provide greater exposure. This provides a solid base in general orthopaedics, adult reconstruction, pediatric orthopaedics, and traumatology. During the PGY4 year, specialty rotations in sports, hand, foot and ankle, tumor, spine, and adult reconstruction are the focus of the curriculum. Six months in the PGY 5 year are spent as a Chief Resident rotation at the VA Medical Center and Hennepin County Medical Center, as well as additional experience in adult reconstruction and sport surgery.
