My scholarly interests are primarily in medical education and the care of individuals with cystic fibrosis. I helped create, and currently maintain, a syllabus for pulmonary and critical care fellows that is posted on the American Thoracic Society Fellows’ Website. Fellows in our program have co-edited each of the past 3 editions. Previous projects also include an evaluation of a curriculum intervention designed to improve the teaching and clinical skills of fellows and writing a practical overview of clinical reasoning targeted toward practicing physicians. I co-direct the Respiratory Pathophysiology course for 2nd year medical students, developed and co-direct the Pulmonary Firm rotation for 3rd year internal medicine residents, and am a member of the American Thoracic Society Education Committee.
My current education-related research explores patient-provider communication and focuses in particular on the experiences of clinicians as recipients, rather than providers, of health care. I am also currently involved in a project designed to identify predictors of performance on a new in-service examination being administered to pulmonary and critical care fellows nationally beginning this spring.
Current clinical research interests include the role of gastroesophageal reflux disease in obstructive lung diseases, the impact of sinus surgery on respiratory function in patients with cystic fibrosis, and the use of high frequency chest wall oscillation devices for airway clearance in patients with cystic fibrosis.
My clinical interests are broad. My outpatient clinic includes both cystic fibrosis and general pulmonary patients, and I attend on the inpatient MICU, Pulmonary Consult, and Cystic Fibrosis/Lung Transplantation services.
