The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology is involved and collaborates with a number of centers and institutes at the University of Minnesota.

Biomedical Engineering Institute

The Biomedical Engineering Institute (BMEI) is an interdisciplinary research organization that leverages the collective expertise, imagination, and energy of University of Minnesota faculty from engineering and health sciences and individuals from local industry toward highly collaborative, goal-oriented research to solve problems in health care. The products of this research are new concepts, procedures, devices, and materials that will enhance the University's portfolio in health care delivery and will support Minnesota's health care product industry.

Surgical Pathology Research Laboratory

The Surgical Pathology Research Laboratory in the University of Minnesota Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology advances scientific discovery by providing laboratory services, technical expertise, and scientific consultation to University faculty, staff, residents, students, as well as the external research community.

Under the direction of D. Evin Gulbahce, M.D., the laboratory offers progressive services that include: an Arcturus Pixcell II Laser Capture Microdissection Center, which isolates single cells or clusters of cells to determine different protein/ DNA expression patterns, especially as they relate to grades of dysplasia, differentiation, and malignant potential; and a Digital Imaging Center, which facilitates the application of new digital technology to research. Additional laboratory services consist of routine tissue processing, routine histology, immunohistochemistry, in-situ hybridization, histologic interpretation, and other research applications.

Masonic Cancer Center

The Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota, is a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. Masonic Cancer Center membership brings together more than 400 professionals from a variety of disciplines, representing nine university colleges and schools and eight area hospitals and clinics. Members include researchers, physician-scientists, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists. 

Members collaborate on investigations that improve cancer prevention, detection, treatment, and quality of life. The center also engages in community outreach and public education efforts addressing cancer. 

Collaborative Studies Clinical Laboratory

The mission of the Collaborative Studies Clinical Laboratory is to provide a service to customers looking for routine or specialized testing for clinical and experimental research needs. Also offered are specimen procurement and storage services.

Center for Immunology

The Center for Immunology is a University-wide multidisciplinary center dedicated to coordinating and promoting efforts in immunology research, education, and clinical applications at the University of Minnesota.

Institute of Human Genetics

The Institute of Human Genetics functions both as a research center and resource for scientists within the Medical School and throughout the University of Minnesota. The Institute develops and fosters excellence in human genetic research and education, and provides a bridge between the basic and clinical sciences particularly as they relate to understanding and treating human diseases.
