BMT Inpatient Unit , Pediatrics Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Medical School, at the University of Minnesota

'Nurses at the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital-Fairview are the best'
Change is good and we are good at it.  Researchers and doctors here at the University of Minnesota continually develop new treatments for 'our' kids, but it is the nursing staff that actually make it all happen!  From our point of view, the hard part is making these wonderful discoveries 'kid friendly'.  And our work is never done.

For kids and their families coming here, it's important to know that our pediatric transplant unit is state of the art, serving newborns to adolescents.  While we have 14 acute care beds specifically dedicated to the care of children undergoing cord blood or marrow transplantation, we are expanding.  Older children and adolescents may be placed temporarily on the adjacent adult blood and marrow transplant unit.

Our Rooms

All rooms are single patient rooms equipped with HEPA air filtering and velocontrol door alarm systems to maximize infection control in the patient environment.  All rooms are equipped with cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring capability as well as capacity for in-room hemodialysis if needed.

All children are assigned a doctor and a primary nurse.  While every patient will get to know more than one doctor and nurse for sure, there will be one in particular as primary nursing is the care delivery model we are proud of on Unit 4A. All nursing staff are highly trained and are prepared to provide expert, innovative and responsive care to BMT patients and their families through general orientation followed by ICU education and competency.  All nursing staff receive ONS chemotherapy training and are PALS certified.

But your child and you will need way more than the care of doctors and nurses.  We have assembled an unparalleled team-our 'BMT Team'.  In addition to doctors and nurses, every child and family will be assigned or come into contact with social workers, pharmacists, nutritionists, child-life specialists, care partner volunteers, chaplains, teachers, etc.   As needed, you may also come into contact with physical and occupational therapies, speech therapists, etc.  Together, we get your child and you though this difficult ordeal as quickly and safely as possible.

While our doctors and researchers may be at the forefront of medical science, we the nurses and other members of the 'BMT Team' are what make this program what it is today.
