Dr. Charnas received his medical degree and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia. He then completed his residency in neurology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, a fellowship in medical genetics at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, followed by a residency in pediatric neurology at the University of Minnesota.

His clinical specialties include neurogenetic and metabolic diseases of the nervous system. Dr. Charnas' research is in clinical application of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in the treatment of neurologic diseases.  His research focus is in Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) where he studies outcome measures after HSCT for early and advanced childhood onset, alternative therapies to HSCT for active cerebral disease and imaging modalities to predict progression of cerebral ALD.  He is supported by grants from NIH and UPF.
