STUDY: GROWTH AND NUTRITION IN THE NEWLY ARRIVED INTERNATIONAL ADOPTEE

RECRUITMENT CRITERIA

• Your child is internationally adopted (IA)
• Your IA child is between 11 and 17 months old at time of arrival
• Your child was born in China, Africa Eastern Europe
• You have not yet brought your child home, or you have only had her/him home for < 2 weeks.

WHAT IS REQUIRED OF YOUR PARTICIPATION

1. You will be required to bring your child to an initial visit with research staff within 2 weeks of her/his arrival, and then again at 6 months post-adoption.
2. During the visit, we will observe your child’s behavior during several behavior tasks. Her/his brain activity will be measured using sensors placed on her/his head.
3. We will ask your permission to collect a small amount of blood for nutritional screening, in addition to the blood already being collected for routine screening tests recommended by your International Adoption Clinic provider. Because blood already will be drawn for clinical purposes, your child will only experience one needlestick. Note: our research grant will cover the costs of these additional tests. You or your insurance provider will still need to cover the cost of the routine portion of the lab tests.
4. We will teach you how to do home saliva collection (which is used to measure the stress hormone cortisol). You will collect saliva at home 2 days during the first month and again at 6 months post-adoption.

PURPOSE  We want to learn whether newly adopted children have specific nutrient deficiencies and whether nutritional status is associated with development in newly adopted children.

 EXPECTED OUTCOME  We hope to develop nutritional treatments to help internationally adopted children succeed.
