Residency Requirements

Holding a full-time job for a year is a standard method for acquiring residency. Residency requirements are established by the Residency Office, 240 Williamson Hall 612-625-6330, or 1-800-752-1000.

Tuition and Fees

Tuition for the academic year of 2006-2007, is $5,473 per semester for in-state residents and $9,558 for out-of-state residents. There are three semesters each year for which the tuition rate is charged:  summer, fall, and spring.  Out-of-state residents may be eligible for the Non Resident Tuition Grantnoted below. Tuition is not inclusive of medical insurance and other university and student fees.

Non Resident Tuition Grant

Students who are non-residents of the State of Minnesota, and do not receive reciprocity benefits, can apply for a grant awarded by the Physical Therapy Program that, for qualified individuals, would reduce their cost to that paid by Minnesota residents. Interested individuals should contact the Program directly for more information.

Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarship opportunities for all students interested in a career in physical therapy can be found at the following: AMBUCS-Scholarships for Therapists, Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) scholarship page and APTA Minority Scholarship Awards and the Allied Health Scholarship program.

In addition, several Program scholarships are available.  They include:

The Barbara Lee Graham Scholarship was established by the family of Barbara Lee Graham, who is a former graduate of the program, to honor her life as a physical therapist and her commitment to education. From this endowment, one scholarship is issued to one or more 3rd year PT student(s) each year based on merit, potential and need.

The Marguerite P. Gardner Fellowship was established in honor of Margie Gardner, who was a long standing faculty member in the Program in Physical Therapy.  This endowed scholarship will be awarded to one or more PT student(s) in their 2nd or 3rd year of study.

The Eleanor McManmon Daly Scholarship was established in honor of Eleanor Daly, an alumni of this program, who has been involved in the provision of physical therapy in many different countries.  This scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to one or more PT student(s) in their 3rd year of study who are involved in an international affiliation.  The purpose of this award is to assist with international travel expenses.

The Sharp Family Fellowship was established by Janice C. and Samuel L. Sharp.  Janice is a 1964 alumna of the Program and is a talented physical therapist working in long-term care.  This fellowship is awarded to two 3rd-year students each year based on merit while in the Program and potential for high professional contributions.  The first awards will occur in 2007.

The Janice Steadland Fellowship was established by Janice W. Steadland, who is a 1956 alumna of the Program impassioned to help physical therapy students in their education.  This fellowship is awarded to one 3rd-year student each year who demonstrates the most exemplary standard of clinical excellence.  The first award will occur in 2006-07.

The Beatrice E. and Hurd Boody Scholarship was established in honor of Beatrice E. Boody, a 1945 graduate of the Physical Therapy Program.  Beatrice Boody dedicated her career to helping others through the art and science of physical therapy profession.  This scholarship is awarded to one or more PT students.

The Rudolph A. Ptak Fellowships were established by Rudy Ptak, who was a 1953 alumnus of the Program and a loyal and talented physical therapist for decades at the University of Minnesota Hospitals with a strong commitment to advancing the profession through student education.  The criteria for these fellowships are being formulated and the first awards will occur in 2007-08.

Nomination for National APTA Scholarships may also occur in the final year of study for exceptional students.
