Welcome, Program in Physical Therapy at the University of Minnesota

Dr. James Carey

Welcome to the Program in Physical Therapy at the University of Minnesota. The Program in Physical Therapy is dedicated to excellence in education so that qualified, professional students from diverse backgrounds can become skillful physical therapists. Entry-level practice in physical therapy includes competent performance in evaluation and treatment of patients, management of resources, supervision of personnel, education, consultation, screening, and referral. The Program prepares students to become generalists with skill in each of these performance areas servicing patients with a variety of clinical conditions.

Our Program offers a curriculum of study for men and women interested in obtaining a doctoral of physical therapy (DPT) degree. The Program requires 3 years of year-round graduate study. Academic coursework and research activity are completed during the first seven semesters. The final two semesters are devoted to clinical internships. Graduates of the Program are eligible to apply for state registration or licensure according to the laws of the states.

Beyond entry-level professional education, the Program in Physical Therapy also is dedicated to postprofessional education. The Program offers plans of study and research for experienced physical therapists who desire to challenge themselves by exploring more deeply the science of physical rehabilitation, leading to either a Ph.D. degree or an M.S. degree in Rehabilitation Science. In addition, program faculty contribute to the residency training program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The Program also strives to meet the continuing education needs of physical therapists

In summary, the Program in Physical Therapy at the University of Minnesota is here to provide exceptional education in both didactic and clinical settings. Please use this website to explore the many opportunities we provide.
