Residency Program, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in the Medical School at the University of Minnesota

Educational Mission Statement:

Our goal is to train academic Physiatrists who will provide the highest level of clinical care and advance the frontiers of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation through research and education.

Overview:

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) is located on the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota. The department serves patients throughout the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area as well as greater Minnesota, the Midwest, and across the nation. The department has trained the vast majority of physiatrists currently in practice in the Twin Cities area.

In addition to the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, other hospitals and clinics within the metropolitan area also support the PM&R residency program.  Experiences range from those at county and suburban hospitals extending to involvement at the community level. This residency has selectively chosen its sites to provide the most complete experience in PM&R.

The University of Minnesota offers two advanced residency positions and two categorical residency positions in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) per year. The Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires a preliminary or transitional year prior to the start of the G2 year. Acceptable transitional experiences may include:

  • Family Practice
  • Pediatrics
  • Psychiatry
  • Surgery
  • Internal Medicine

For further clarification regarding acceptable transitional year rotations, please see the ACGME website or contact Patti Olsen, Program Associate, at 612-626-4913 or olsen014@umn.edu.
