Areef Ishani, M.D., M.S.
Assistant Professor of Medicine

Areef Ishani, MD, MS is Assistant Professor of Medicine in the division, with a joint appointment at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and the United States Renal Data System.  Dr. Ishani received his medical degree from the University of Toronto.  He completed his internal medicine residency and nephrology fellowship at the University of Minnesota.  Additionally, he graduated with a Masters in Clinical Research from the University of Minnesota and recently completed a career development award as a clinical scholar at the Minneapolis Center for Epidemiologic and Clinical Research at the Minneapolis VAMC.  The major focus of Dr. Ishani’s research has been in the prevention of chronic kidney disease and complications associated with kidney disease.  Dr. Ishani is involved in a number of epidemiological studies to define the epidemiology of complications associated with chronic kidney disease such as osteoporosis and progressive loss of bone mineral density.  In addition, Dr. Ishani is currently the principal investigator of a VA funded randomized controlled trial that will determine if nurse case management of individuals with diabetes leads to improved control of blood pressure, lipids, and glycemia compared to usual care.
