In addition to the main Biomedical Library in Diehl Hall, the Department of Surgery runs its own Resident Resource Room. This room provides access to surgical textbooks, computers, and a quiet atmosphere for entering data information, operative logs or reading.

Surgery Editor
Mary E. Knatterud, Ph.D., assistant professor and research associate, critiques and proofs manuscripts and other written materials for faculty members, residents, and other authors who request language-oriented advice. She also produces a 12-page department newsletter, The Cutting Edge and miscellaneous publications.

Surgery Photographer
The Department of Surgery photographer, Gerald G. (Jerry) Vincent, provides slides and prints suitable for presentation or publication—using state-of-the-art film recording equipment—for any faculty member or resident who asks for help.

Continuing Medical Education Course
Each June, the Department of Surgery presents its Annual Continuing Education Course, under the direction of Dr. John S. Najarian, Clinical Professor. The course title of the 71st Annual Course to be held June 14-16, 2007, is "Advances in Breast, Endocrine, and Cancer Surgery."
The 75th E. Starr Judd Lecture will be delivered by Edward M. Copeland III, M.D., Edward R. Woodward Professor and Chairman, Distinguished Professor of Surgery, University of Florida, College of Medicine, Gainesville, and current President of the American College of Surgeons. His lecture title is, "Evolution of Surgery for Breast Cancer," which is scheduled for the first day of the course.
Designed primarily for surgeons in the region, the four-day course is open to current residents free of charge. More than 600 people usually attend.

Colon and Rectal Surgery Course
Each fall, the Department of Surgery Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery presents a four-day course entitled "Principles in Colon and Rectal Surgery." Two named lectures are given in memory of William C. Bernstein and Howard M. Frykman. Open to current residents free of charge, the course typically attracts about 250 registrants.
