Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology
The Interventional Radiology section performs all of the non-neurologic and non-cardiac interventions in the hospital. Using fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT and occasionally MRI, we perform from 20-30 cases per day managing peripheral arterial disease, traumatic and other causes of bleeding, tumor ablation, pain control, biopsies, drainage of abscesses and fluid collections in the chest and abdomen, hemodialysis problems, central venous access, and access to all manner of obstructed organs including kidneys, livers and the GI tract.
We have a few areas of special interest. Led by Sharon Lehmann, our nurse coordinator, we have developed a program to treat uterine fibroids with embolization that has excellent outcomes. We act as a major midwest referral center for vascular malformations. We have long been a national leader in the treatment of venous thrombosis. We have developed a dedicated 3D non-invasive imaging laboratory that does all types of vascular imaging. And, due to the world renowned transplant program at the UMMC, we have a long history of innovation in the management of transplant complications.
We pride ourselves on maintaining close relationships with all of our clinical colleagues, offering them timely and patient focused care. We have an outstanding team of technologists, nurses, and nursing assistants who make the IR section the quality organization that so many services depend on daily for their patients' needs.
