Research Interests:
• To establish in vivo 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) markers of cellular and biochemical processes associated with neurodegeneration, such as gliosis, mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress, in parallel studies with patients and transgenic mouse models, with particular emphasis on spinocerebellar ataxias and Parkinson’s disease. Such biomarkers are expected to facilitate early disease detection and treatment monitoring in pre-clinical and clinical trials.
• To determine the effects of diabetes and the hypoglycemic consequences of intensive insulin therapy on brain glycogen metabolism in humans and to elucidate the role of brain glycogen in the pathogenesis of hypoglycemia unawareness syndrome using 13C NMR.
• To develop methods for non-invasive assessment of the metabolic aspects of pancreatic islet cells in vitro and in vivo with the goal of increasing success rates of islet transplantations for Type 1 diabetes; specifically to study carbohydrate metabolism and energy status of pancreatic islets under conditions encountered pre- and post-transplantation using 13C and 31P NMR.
