Renal Function Testing
I. Program Content
- Trainees are encouraged to develop knowledge and expetise in the following areas including indications, contraindications, complications, interpretation of results, cost effectiveness, and application to patient care of:
- Urinalysis including dipstick and sediment.
- Measurement of renal plasma flow and glomerular filtration rate, including interpretation of serum creatinine and calculation of its clearnce.
- Measurement of renal concentrating and diluting capacity.
- Measurement of microalbuminuria.
- Measurement of proteinuria using semiquantitatiove and quantitative methods.
- Assessment of urinary acidification.
- Assessment of renal sodium and potassium handling.
- Renal radiology.
a. Urography.
b. Ultrasonography.
c. Radionucleide scans.
d. Computed tomography.
e. Magnetic resonance imaging.
f. Renal circulation imaging (angiography).
II. Patient Care Experience
- Trainees must be given sufficient direct experience to develop expertise in the performance and interpreetaiton of:
- Urinalysis.
- Accurate and timed complete collection of urine for renal function testing, proteinuria, and microalbuminuria.
- Fractional excretion of electrolytes.
- Renal Function clearance studies (optional).
