Division research interests include the genetic basis of renal disease, stem cells and the kidney, the clinical epidemiology of pre-ESRD, prevention of chronic transplant rejection, the epidemiology of post-transplant complications, mechanisms of glomerular permeability, and biomarkers of renal disease.

Faculty research interests are as follows:

Barbara Daniels, M.D.

  • Structural determinants of glomerular permselectivity
  • Glomerular permselectivity in Alport syndrome

Sandeep Gupta, M.D.

  • Stem cells and the kidney
  • Renal regeneration
  • Cellular therapy of kidney diseases

Hassan Ibrahim, M.D., M.S.

  • Chronic allograft nephropathy
  • Predictors of human renal disease progression
  • The role of aldosterone in the progression of renal disease

Areef Ishani, M.D., M.S.

  • Prevention of chronic kidney disease and complications associated with kidney disease
  • Epidemiological studies to define the epidemiology of complications associated with chronic kidney disease such as osteoporosis and progressive loss of bone mineral density

Bert Kasiske, M.D.

  • Outcomes post kidney transplantation
