Research Opportunities for Medical Students

Medical students seeking opportunities to do research have a few options.

Medical students may contact departmental research representatives for guidance.

Medical students may directly approach faculty (go to individual departments’ Web sites and dig into faculty research interests). Once an agreement is made with a faculty member, the student should consult with departmental staff to make sure guidelines are followed.

Or, medical students can consult the list of research opportunities compiled by the Medical Education staff of the Medical School.

Medical students seeking more personalized guidance may make an appointment with Charles Moldow, M.D., vice dean for research in the Medical School. (612) 626-3287.

Limited funding for medical student research is available through the Minnesota Medical Foundation.

Nationally, research support for medical students is available through the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, which funds about 60 one-year research scholarships annually, and the Doris Duke Clinical Fellowships, which funds research for least 50 medical students annually.

Faculty members may be able to help medical students find funds for dedicated research time through local chapters of disease-oriented foundations.
